I am not sure if I got your question correctly.
If it's regarding the size of the thumbnail, in the bottom-left there is a slider named "Thumbnails." Drag it to the left.
It is not the size of the photos, it is the dimension of the preview field, the field that shows the photos to be imported .
The dimension of this field on my Mac is more or less square , a ratio of Wide and Height of 0,9 ( W/H), in all the LH instructions (manual, help, book etc) I see a wide , oblong, preview field with a W/H ratio of 1,7!! How can I change the dimension of this field from square to wide?
Thanks for your respons anyway

The aspect ratio shown is determined by the photos themselves. You can't change the aspect ratio in the import screen.
I take it back. You cannot drag the panel edges on the left and right. All I can suggest is that you make sure that LR is in full screen mode before importing. That will maximize the interior portion of the import screen, but its aspect ratio will depend on the aspect ratio of your monitor.
