    Leaderboard size and positioning

    nyran20
Hello everyone. I'm designing my first site and I'm having a problem. I made a leaderboard in Fireworks that's 728 x 90 (as I'm told is the customary size from several sites) and imported it into Dreamweaver. When I preview in my browser it doesn't turn out to be nearly the full width of the browser (I'd say it's about half the width of the page). Is it my screen resolution (currently set to 1152 x 864)? Is there a way to make a picture stretch or shrink to the browser? I want the leaderboard to be 90 pixels in height and as wide as their browser window without having to scroll.

      Thanks!

The pic is 728px wide. If your browser viewport is 1456px wide, it'll be
          exactly half the width. 8)

          > Is it my screen resolution (currently set to 1152 x 864)?

No, it's your browser viewport width.

          > Is there a way to make a picture stretch or shrink to the browser?

Not reliably - but there is a way to make it float to the center in a
container with a compatible background color.

You can't stretch an image without distorting it. Best work-around is
to fade your graphic to a color that matches the background color of the
            site. Similar to this:

I've seen this suggestion of stretching an image mentioned previously but
              never understood it.

If an image is 500 px wide how can it be made wider in a browser. Narrower I
              can understand but wider ??

                <img src="yourimage.jpg" width="750"....

Normally, this destroys any cosmetic appearance of the image.

That image actually doesn't look all that bad when it's stretched. Most

Agreed. Displaying images at anything other than their natural size
(other than spacer.gif's) is usually a bad idea.

I guess my new question is should I continue to design based on the assumption that everyone uses a resolution that makes the appropriate size of my leaderboard of 728*90?

                        Check out this site.... http://forexfactory.com/

Regardless of how you change your resolution, that leaderboard is the full width of the browser all the time. That's what I'm looking to do. Could I make a large leaderboard then tell Dreamweaver to shrink it if the browser needs to? That page uses a 'width=100%' code it seems. Can I design a graphic using that instead of a static size?

The table uses a small gradient background image that tiles to fill the
                            width.

Resolution is not the issue. It's browser width. A browser that is 640px
wide can exist on any size/resolution screen. Read this -
http://www.thepattysite.com/window_sizes1.cfm, choose a minimum width, and
use that. Then read Gary's post.
