Spend the usual two hours on chat line, at the end of which they said, Go to the Community, CS4 is no longer serviced by us!
Since it is Mac latest operating system it could also be related to permissions.
Please follow the below mentioned steps to provide appropriate permissions on your machine :

Adobe creative suite CS 4 is a very old software and the operating system you are using is the latest, hence there could be compatibility issues as adobe has not tested these apps on the latest operating systems.
However, you can try downloading & installing the setup again for Adobe creative suite CS 4 from the following link: Download Adobe Creative Suite 4 products

Thank you for trying to help...it still stalls on the "preparing to
install" phase, even after having checked your suggestions. Both the CD and
the downloaded version get just that far and then stop. Very frustrating!

This could be a compatibility issue.
Kindly let us know what is the operating system of your computer with its version?
If it is MAC, attach a screen shot of your Activity Monitor showing the processes running on your machine.
If it is WIN, attach a screen shot of your Task Manager showing the processes running on your machine.

and I should mention that Acrobat is working OK on my Macbook pro retina,
also on the latest operating system....

Step 1 :
1) Right click on Finder icon and select "Go-To" Folder option.
2) You will get a text box, type-in below command and then hit 'Return' key.( Do not miss ~ symbol)
~/library
3) Right click on Adobe folder and select "GetInfo" option.
Expand the Sharing & Permissions section.
Click the lock icon in the lower-right corner. Enter your administrator user name and password when prompted, and then click OK.
Please click on '+' symbol , it will open list of user accounts. Add Currently logged in user name and Administrator option,
Then provide "Read & Write" permission to Currently logged in user name and Administrator option,.
Click the Gear icon, and select Apply to Enclosed Item. Close the Get Info dialog box.
Step 2:
