My lightroom crashes after trying to open preferences

    jarmilaw37333836 Level 1

      Hi all,

I have a problem trying to open preferences which results in a crash and exit of lightroom.

Changing the use autobahn setting to false in the preferences file as well as changing the number format setting in windows as proposed in another post is not helping or changing anything.

Thank you all for your help.

          Hi jarmilaw,

Would suggest you to reset Lightroom Preferences and then, check : Resetting (or 'Trashing') the Lightroom Preferences file | Lightroom Forums

If that does not help, could you please share the event viewer crash logs ? : Photoshop Elements Editor Help | How to Find Crash Logs on Windows

          Regards,

          Chetna

            Hi Chetna,

            thanks for your answer:

Yes I´ve checked with resetting the file, hitting ALT+SHIFT on restart. Lightroom starts correctly in initial mode (showing tips), preferences file is deleted from Lightroom Preferences folder but Lightroom again crashes.

After crash preferences folder remains empty except the "Lightroom 6 Startup Preferences.agprefs" file.

                Hi,

                short update.

Reinstallation of lightroom 6.0 worked as expected. preferences could be opened without issues.

Upgrading to 6.4 and in a second test to 6.5 again produced crashes.

Each time I have reset the preferences before performing my test.

As grafic driver I was reinstalling an "old" version of the driver officially supported by the manifacturer and in a second set of tests the latest geforce nvidea driver 364.51 from 08.03.2016

Everytime I receive the same error message produced in KERNELBASE.dll library.

Looking forward to your help and feedback.

                Regards,

                André

                  Thanks for the update.

Do you have any USB or any external device plugged in to your machine?

If yes, unplug it and then, relaunch Lightroom and check.

                  That should probably help.

                    Hi Chetna,

i have deplugged everything despite my mouse, restarted lightroom and still have the same issue.

                    Also after deleting/resetting the preferences.

The issue is fixed in Lr 6.5.

A new behavior has been implemented in Lr 6.5. Whenever there is a GPU crash due to the GPU driver like this, Lr would just turn off the GPU acceleration preference automatically. Once you got a working GPU driver installed, you can try to manually turn GPU acceleration preference back on.

If you reset the user preferences without actually installing a working GPU driver, it will crash in the next launch (only once, not repeatedly as it used to until you reset the preference again). If possible, you need to take action to talk to your GPU vendors to get an updated driver that works with Lightroom.

                        Hi Simon,

your answer really does not help.

If you are following my answers I have tried using LR 6.5 with several different graphic driver versions. All caused a crash.

Everytime when testing I have reinstalled Lightroom 6 beginning with version 6.0. - The preferences showd up correctly with every version of the graphic driver.

Upgrading to 6.4 and 6.5 cuased the crashes while trying to open the preferences.

I am not using a very specialiced Graphics Card. It is a standard Gigabyte Geforce card which never caused any issues in former Lightroom versions, and as said ALL driver versions over the last months including the newest version work perfectly except LR 6.4 and LR 6.5.

Graphic Card manifacturer are not producing their drivers nort cards for specific programs. You should know that it is the other way round, meaning your tools, like LR are using libraries from graphic cards for calculations etc. I am sorry but your proposal to contact them to get a Lightroom working driver version seems for me like a joke. In addition if you think it is graphic card related then I really want to understand why deactivating the graphic card support in the settings is still causing crahses. Could you please be so kind and explain me this point?

One additional information: Adobe Photoshop is also running without any issues and with every driver version I have installed so far.

As already discused with Chetna via private chat I would really appreciate if my topic can be brought up as a support case with Adobe. I am really disappointed with the way my request is currently handled. I am from my business perspective dependant on a working version of Lightroom. Currently I have a version installed where I cannot change any preferences like export settings, etc.

Attached the system info if they might bring any value to this discussion.

                          Hi,

I have exactly the same problem as André and like him I am disappointed at Adobe's responses.

I have been running Lightroom since version 4 with no problems until 6.4 and now 6.5.  My graphics card is an AMD 7770 made by AMD and all my drivers etc are up to date.

                            Hi André,

Are you able to run Photoshop with the latest Adobe Camera Raw 9.5 by opening a raw file? If you go to the Adobe Camera Raw preferences dialog, is the GPU acceleration enabled there? What happens if you try to enable it?

On this issue, if you launch Lr 6.5 and then go to the develop module. Quit Lr without visiting the preferences menu.

Then relaunch Lr 6.5, then go to the preference menu, does Lr crash?

                              Hi,

My PC is running Windows 10 at the current supported level with all updates.

I have tried the suggested re start after closing in Develop mode but no change.

André is using Windows 7.1 with an Nvidia card and I am using Windows 10 with an AMD card.  We both have the same error so it must be Lightroom at fault, V6.4 and 6.5.

May be you could end the details required for the registry changes to allow us to make a MiniDump for you to study?

                              Regards,

                              Dave

                                Hi Simon, hi Dave

@Dave: Thanks for providing my PC details to Simon.

Regarding the proposal to go to develop > exit lightroom > restart > preferences: Lightroom again crashes on my PC.

Camera Raw (via Photoshop) is not giving me any error so far. I am using Photoshop CS6. I´ve tried running the 32bit as well as the 64bit version.

I am fully with Dave regarding his proposal to provide you with more details enabling you to maybe better understand what is going on on our systems.

                                Looking forward to your feedback.

                                Best regards,

                                André

Also, can you follow the "Manually disable the graphics processor" steps in Adobe Lightroom GPU Troubleshooting and FAQ to see if it helps?

                                      Hi Simon,

we have both tried the disabling (autobahn) but to no avail.

I have made a minidump but it may not tell the whole story as I had to start the dump then switch to lightroom/preferences before the dump had completed.   Have read loads about dumps/crashes etc so I ended up using AdPlus to create a full crash dump (900mb) Link to my Dropbox is: Dropbox - Adobe Lightroom Crash Dumps  lightroom.exe.14108.dmp is the mini dump and the other two folders contain the large dump (I think)

Hope these help but if you need something else let me know.

                                      Kind regards,

                                      Dave

Ok. If the manual autobahn fix isn't doing it for you, then the crash is due to a separate reason that I am not aware of. Looking at the dump file now.

Thanks for the dump file that you uploaded. It gives me an idea on the nature of the issue. It might be related to one crash bug that we fixed on the Mac for the next update. That fix might also address this Windows issue as well. I am double-checking with my colleague.

In the meantime, if you can follow the instructions at Lightroom -traceback debugging tip to provide with me the traceback logs. That will help me ascertain the the issue.

                                                Hi Simon,

I have added a DebugView folder with the report inside to Dropbox - Adobe Lightroom Crash Dumps

                                                Thanks,

                                                Dave

Thanks Guys. The trace back is very helpful.

In both @jarmilaw37333836 and @squeezy cases, Lightroom tries to retrieve the file system path to the "My Pictures" folder that is associated with your account on your local Windows machine and somehow it failed and could not retrieve the path.

Are there anything unique about your setup? After doing some googling, I found this Repair missing User folders in Windows 7 | Scottie's Tech.Info that might be helpful.

                                                    !Hi Simon,

thanks for that, you have solved my problem.  It is to do with the "My Pictures" folder, although W10 does not use the MY part, but uses Libraries.

I use an SSD for my C drive so I moved the actual folders in he libraries folder to an HDD disk, but without thinking I have removed that drive and set up the folder on a new HDD, drive D and it seems that it was not working correctly.  The Pictures folder was pointing to the now non existant folder.  I changed the path to my D:\photos and after it ran through a setup process all now works.

This could be a problem for other software.

Cannot find the CORRECT button for your answer....

                                                    Many thanks,

                                                    Dave

Thanks Dave for the confirmation. We were able to able to simulate the crash internally by removing the "My Pictures"/"Pictures" folder and consequently we also made a fix in Lr not to crash when such condition happens. The fix will be in the next Lr update. Sorry for the inconvenience.

This should be fixed in the Lightroom CC 2015.5.1/6.5.1 update that was released today: http://blogs.adobe.com/lightroomjournal/2016/04/lightroom-cc-2015-5-1-now-available.html
