Hello, forum! I just started using AE on my PC and I'm having some trouble with RAM usage and crashing.
When I first started out, everything seemed okay, but as soon as I started previewing stuff, a message popped up, warning me about running low on memory, then my AE proceeded to crash. I went into memory options and set it to only use half of my memory (8 GB), but the program froze and crashed upon trying to preview more than just small bits. My specs shouldn't(?) be a problem, maybe some of my options aren't optimized, as I haven't really changed anything except giving the program less RAM. Also when I check my performance through task manager while this all goes down, it does seem like most of my RAM is being strained, I'm really unsure here. My preview was set to 1/4 quality and my project is 1920x1080, I wouldn't assume it's that hard on the PC, although I've had experience with AE loading all computers I've ever worked on a lot.

MSI GeForce GTX 970 4GB
what version of AE? mac/pc? the latest updates fixed memory leaks. Also, I've seen memory errors from incompatible video codecs. Try transcoding to handbrake as quicktime png and importing again.
PC, CC 2015. Creative Cloud isn't teelling me about any new updates and I last updated 34 days ago. I should be fine transcoding through Media Encoder, right?
I recommend trying handbrake on a few seconds of video, if that fixes the error, walk backwards slowly with adobe media encoder until somethings breaks again. You need to find the problem before improving the problem.
