Printing to PDF is an archaic and unnecessary method creating a PDF file.
The preferred method of creating a PDF is to export a PDF.
Choose File > Export > Adobe PDF (Print). The PDF Preset you choose is dependent on what your printer needs. For newer RIPs (processors) the best choice is PDF/X-4. For older processors that can't handle RGB images or transparency, choose PDF/X-1a. (The best choice is to ask your commercial printer.)
In addition to creating PDF via distillation of PostScript being an archaic method of PDF creation as previously noted, Apple removed the ability for Adobe to install and use what was once the Adobe PDF printer, allegedly for “security reasons.” Although you could conceivably export PostScript and manually input that to the Distiller, this method is not only inconvenient, but produces noticeably inferior PDF.
Thanks very much, Steve. That's the information I was after.
