color background only for selected text

In Indesign CC 2015, I would like to provide a color background, but only for selected text, not for the entire text frame. How could this be done?

The reason I want to do this, is that I use it as a flag for a newsletter to indicate that an item still needs to have some action taken on it to clarify the text.

      Thank you.

          1. For whole paragraphs: Use a paragraph style with paragraph shading.
          2. For single words use a character style with a thick underline and an appropriate offset.

Both will only work fine, if you work completely with Paragraph and Character Styles, otherwise you will have problems later to remove it without destroying your desired text structure.
