Within my key word hierarchy I have, for example, diferrent types of photography. That is a folder called "photography". Underneath that I have landscape, seascape, portrait, candid etc ...... How do I get just the keywords within photography to display but not the word "photography" itself?

Do you mean, how do you get photos containing child keywords of "photography" to display, but not photos containing the keyword "photography"? If that's what you want:
In the Metadata browser of the Library Filter bar, add the Keyword column. Expand the parent keyword "photography". Click the first child keyword, and shift-click the last child keyword, so that all the keywords under "photography" are selected. Now all the photos containing child keywords of "photography" will be showing, but not photos containing "photography":
