it uses a different format even though both cameras have the file of CR2
CR2 is not a fixed file format. It varies with every camera model that Canon make. Same is true for all camera manufacturers.
New camera model, new Raw file format, same Raw file extension (CR2 = Canon, NEF = Nikon etc).
The 1000D is supported in Camera Raw 5.1 and later - compatible with CS4 and later. CS5 can open these Raw files.
The 6D is supported in Camera Raw 7.3 and later - compatible with CS6 and later. CS5 cannot open these Raw files.
Raw support is never added retrospectively to older versions of Adobe software so you'll never be able to open 6D Raw files in CS5.
- Join the Cloud (Photography Plan) and get Photoshop CC 2015 + Lightroom CC 2015 for $10/month (provided your computer can run them)
- Download the free Adobe DNG converter, convert all 6D Raw files to DNG format then edit the DNG files in CS5. An extra step for you but no extra cost.

Camera Raw: How to use Adobe DNG Converter - YouTube
Ahh that is where I was going wrong!
Thank you very much for informing me of this. I have downloaded the DNG converter which is working well it's just a shame it takes a long time to convert first! Better start saving for the photoshop upgrade!
I know this is and old thread, but if you have CS5, RAW is only supported up to version 6.7.........If you have CS6, RAW is supported up to version 9.0+
Canon 6D camera RAW files is supported only through Adobe CS6. If you don't want to upgrade to CS6, then download the DNG files and convert the RAW files.
i downloaded the dng converter but can not get it to work. any suggestions?
when i go to select the files, the file names are gray and i can not select them. : /
