What you are saying is not clear to me please answer some questions.
Where was your catalog originally?
How did you move it?
When you say you "imported" the catalog from your external drive, what exactly did you do??
Originally the catalog was on an external device (LaCie) in a folder I had named MY Lightroom Photos.
I then copied the folder to a new external device (LaCie). I connected the new external device to the new computer.
Next I went under File and selected import catalog. Then I noticed that all the edits I had made were gone. I now realize from some research I should have not imported them.
Does this help. Thanks
If the images are in the same file structure that the were on the old computer, all you need to do is OPEN the catalog that you copied from the old computer. I don't understand your terminology when you say that you "imported" a catalog. Catalogs cannot be imported, they can only be opened. They are the only file that Lightroom opens.
Mr Kiwi and others will probably give you a more thorough reply. But, your answer to his questions suggest you may have a fundamental (and common) misunderstanding of how LR works.
The "catalog" and the "folder" where you keep you image files are not the same. Your image files are not in the "catalog". The "catalog" is a file, or files, that are a database of only your changes. Consider it a detailed set of notes for each and every image file.
When you "Import" you are not putting image files into LR. You are only telling LR where they are so that it can keep notes on what you do. You can use LR to move the files. If you use anything else to move the files, LR will become terribly confused and you, not Lightroom, have to fix that.
You have moved the image files and created a new catalog. You have left the old catalog, with the records of all your work, on the old computer.
My suggestion is to Google for some tutorials on moving from one computer to another. There is excellent training from people with names like Kost, Grey, Morganti, Brampton and others.
Jim yes I misunderstood what I did. I imported from another catalog which is not importing a catalog.
However I tried to open the catalog but it did not work. What I plan to do today is plug in my original external drive with the original catalog and try what you suggested. Thanks for your feed back.
Thank you. You are correct on my knowledge of LR. I had no idea how the edits were saved. Thanks for the information.
I will let you all know if I am successful tonight on getting it done correctly.
Thanks again. I appreciate all the help.
I tried to open my original catalog in LR by choosing file then choosing open catalog and navigation to the catalog I want to open and select open. However it is not opening the catalog. Any thoughts why this is happening. I am now going to uninstall LR6 and reinstall it and try the process over again.
Mac or windows? What version?
What exact version number (x.y) of Lightroom are you using?
What exact error message are you getting when you open the catalog?
Mac version 10.11.3
LR CC 2015.5
I was able to open the catalog however i do not see my edits.
