RAM preview VERY slow -- not a new machine, no new upgrades, no settings changed

Mysteriously, the RAM preview in AE6 has slowed to a crawl over the weekend. Last week I was having no trouble previewing complex 3D layouts, this week it takes several minutes to preview a single frame. What could have changed? I have allotted enough space to the disk and media caches. I haven't made any changes to AE's settings. Nothing about the software, OS, or hardware has changed over the weekend. I'm not sure where to begin problem-solving. Any ideas?
