You have not provided any useful technical information like system specs, error messages or whatever and if you really mean version 5.5 from ca. 2001, then I'm not sure what to tell you to begin with...

Sorry I should have provided more info...

The program shuts down, but the AfterFX.exe's still run. If I start After Effects again it starts a whole new set of AfterFX.exe's, as if it was not running. So I end up with 16 AfterEX.exe's running. I am able to stop the processes manually.  I am running it in multiple CPU render mode. Everything seems to work fine and I have had no crashes or freezes. As I said this has just recently been happening and I don't know what has changed. Yes this is an older version of AFX, but it is all I have at the moment. Thank you for your reply and I am hoping somebody can help me with this bug. It is not a big problem, just annoying....

Do you actually mean AE version 5.5 or do you mean CS5.5 (which is AE version 10.5)?

If CS5.5, what are your memory and multiprocessing settings?

There was a bug fix update for CS5.5. Have you installed it? After Effects CS5.5 (10.5.1) update (unlikely to fix your current issue, but it wouldn't hurt to at least download the update if you haven't already).
