After Effects CC 2015: Use a solid to define a mask?

      Hi gang,

Got a question.  I'm working with 3D text (using the Ray Trace renderer), and using a solid with fractal noise on it as an environmental layer, thus giving the reflective text some texture.  Thing is, doing it that way blots out the alpha channel, meaning I have to sit through the render twice--once for it to render the text, and then again for me to render a separate alpha-only version (without the environmental layer), which I have to then composite using Premiere.

Obviously it's very time-consuming to do it this way.  I've read that it's possible to use solids to function as masks, but no matter what I do, even with the transparency grid turned on, After Effects still shows me a black background.

Can someone help me with this?
