I had to change back to an older version of my main catalog and delete the mobile data, as synching stopped working. I logged out of LR mobile and signed back in, but nothing is synching although the function is enabled on my mac desktop running the latest OS el Capitan.

Your synced collections from the previous catalog would have removed from the cloud. You will have to sync the collections from the other catalog for your mobile device to connect to the files.
Collections from only one catalog can be synced at any point in time.
