It is always interesting to see what effects new OS versions have....
In all honesty, you will be much happier using a card reader instead of directly attaching your camera. The card readers are much faster in the transfer, much less error prone, and do not require special drivers to work.

Open Finder and see if the camera is listed as a connected device. If it is then Copy the images from the camera to a folder of your choosing then open LR and import the images from that folder.
But in all honesty you should never connect the camera to a computer directly to import images. You should always use a Card Reader.
The only time you would connect the camera directly is if you were doing a photo shoot that you Tether the camera to the computer and LR.
You most likely need to change your OSX system settings. By default Apple launches the app for Photos (previously iPhotos) when you connect a camera or storage card.
But it is possible to change the default settings. You can then import directly to LR.
