The smart previews will create duplicates and will not be merged as they get saved with the catalog. So rebuild smart previews for the original dng's when you import catalog from your MBP
Just so I understand - after I've imported the smart preview catalogue, rebuild smart previews in the master catalog and that will...remove duplicates?...sync up the changes on the smart previews with the originals...?
Each catalog gets its own set of regular previews and smart previews.
When you import your images from catalog A to catalog B:
- You will have one or two sets of original files, by your choosing based on the import settings you choose.
- Since both catalogs contain duplicate images, the regular previews and smart previews will also be duplicated unless you delete the images from the old catalog.
Looks like I answered my own question. It's possible to just update the previews and develop settings of the master catalog.
I created a test catalog of a few selects from my smart preview catalog and then imported that catalog into my master catalog. The dialogue box gives me the option to not import the original files and only update previews, metadata, and develop settings.
So all is good. Thanks all for weighing in.
