Does this look like a good laptop for editing Premiere Pro?

    #1Artist

I've done a lot of searching and I like the custom configurations that are possible at XoticPC. An older model of a ROG laptop has a metal top and was preferred by reviewers of newer ROG models with plastic tops. XoticPC includes a newer CPU and because the starting price is low for an older model, I'm able to push RAM up to 32GB and get a Samsung 500GB SSD plus a 1T HD for less than a newer model with less speed. Also, since XoticPC is putting it together, I'm adding copper cooling. Any suggestions welcome. Here is the $1395 configuration:

...I am currently using an "older" Asus G750JW gaming laptop with lesser specs than yours with no problems. In fact, I am running TWO separate WQHD ( 2560 x 1440p ) IPS monitors at 60 fps each in addition to the native display.

Only two things catch my eye. If you have two internal 2.5" SATA IIIdrive bays, you want to make the best use of that feature.

The "EVO" drives have an inferior controller compared to the Samsung 850Pro series.....if you can upgrade to the 850 pro SSD for your boot drive, that would be ideal.....at least a 500 GB model...they are more durable. This drive should only have the OS, programs, and Windows page file on it. You MAY also place your "media cache" and "cache" files here. Testing done by Bill Gehrke has shown there is NO difference in performance when doing so AND those files are easily erased after a project is completed. ALL other files need to go on the second SSD.

In the second bay, you want a very fast drive for your media, and all other files not on the boot drive. There is a large difference in performance using a fast SSD here, instead of a slow, spinning drive. Put a larger Samsung 850 pro there....at least a 1 TB  SSD.

Be aware that even over just a USB 3 port, a Samsung external SSD like a T1, or, T3 model will perform at over 400 MB / sec read and write using the USAP protocol. I have a T1....it works GREAT !

My laptop has the option to place the 2 internal SSDs into a RAID 0 array for maximum performance of about 1 GB/ sec read and write, but, I have not used it as I cannot figure a good way to back it up. If you did the RAID, ALL files just would go on it !

In any case, that laptop is great.....only the drives are of a concern......32 GB memory is great, 4 GB video memory is great, the CPU is very good as it turbos nicely.

Completely agree with JF.  Forget the hard drive and go all SSD.  Also get your self one of the Samsung new T3 drives if you need more/removable storage.  Double check with Xotic on the "1 x ON SALE!! 1TB 7200RPM (SATA III 6GB/s) in ODD Bay $95.00"  In many ODD bays the interface port is only SATA II and plugging in a fast SATA III device is of little or no value.  Just because the drive is a SATA III does not mean you would ever get that performance like using that device to hold a SATA III SSD.

I have a Sony FDR-AX100 which records XAVC S 4K 100 Mb/s and it edits this and lower resolution media very smoothly.  Notice I did not say it works with the more demanding XAVC pro media.

Thanks so much for the tips. It looks like Gigabyte has more to offer. I

really like the tip on the new Samsugn T3

I have used the helpful information above regarding Samsung 950 Pro M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD speed. I have configured two more options below. The ASUS UX501V2-DS71 option would be used with the recommended Samsung T3 1TB USB 3.1 External SSD for an additional $378.

Option 1 is more affordable and it only has one  512GB Samsung 950 Pro M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD but it will be connected to the new 1T T3 external drive. Option 1 would cost $2,025. Option two would be $2,533. The ASUS has had some complaints regarding the flimsy, reflective screen( although it is 4K) and it will be limited to 16GB RAM. The Gigabyte P35 includes 32GB RAM plus 6GB Video whereas the ASUS has 2GB for video. All suggestions appreciated. I am so much more informed from your help.

"1 x RAID-0 (Stripe) Combines for performance $0.00" I sure hope you were not RAIDing those two 950 PRO's  Individually they are as much performance as you could want.

I sure do like the two Samsung 950 Pro M.2 SSD's plus a standard 2.5" slot which has the 2TB 5400 rpm drive which is not usable for editing but if you use it for on-line archiving would be OK.  If you needed to cut some money you could drop the OS/Applications 950 SSD to 256 GB.

It comes out to $3,001 with cash discount. Whatever that means? This is 4K and I think two 256GB Pro Pci will be enough to feed the 1T Samsung SSD.

Bill, thanks for the link to ADK. I'm more of an audio person than video and they do both.

The reason I started this search was because my older Dell laptop was full of errors and programs were stopping for no reason. I suspect that a hacker was into my network. I reinstalled win 10 and removed all programs. Following a tutorial, I assigned a new ip address. This thing is running fine now. I have learned so much about M.2 PCIe storage and will follow the development of this fast storage in more and more laptops. HP is adding it to a new laptop coming out this month. Since I no longer have a laptop problem, I'll keep watching. I think I will eventually build a HTPC desktop with video and audio editing hardware included. I've built a few audio recording computers in the past. It really is very simple.
