Different font on Samsung tablet since 26/4

    JonasHolmqvist Level 1

Using Samsung galaxy Tab4 with android (also tried tab3) PDF documents suddenly started showing a different text font when opened in acrobat reader.

Older documents still displays with original font (arial) and a different reader also displays correctly. I have not changed the way I save PDF-files and I've tried various methods but with the same result.

          Hi Jonas Holmqvist,

Please let us know the dot version of Adobe Reader you are using.

Is this issue occurs with a particular PDF?

Or is it an issue with a particular font?

Try to replicate the issue with other PDF and let us know.

          Regards,

          Meenakshi

Adobe reader is the latest on Google play 16.0 but I also tried with 15.3.1 before that.

The issue occurs with every PDF created since 26/4 while older documents show up correctly.

I haven't tried different fonts as Arial is the one I need to use, but it's also the most common one so it shouldn't be a problem.

I have tried various PDFs and methods of saving them.

              Hi Jonas Holmqvist,

Could you please share the PDF that is created after 26/4 and an older PDF along with the dates when they were created as we need to check it on our end.

I have sent an email address in your private message, please share both the PDF's to that email Address.

              Regards,

              Meenakshi

I also noticed this problem with the recent update.

                1. I create a document on my PC in MS Word
                  (Office 2013) using Arial font.
                2. “Save as” a .pdf document.

When I open the resulting .pdf document with Adobe Reader – Android
on my Nexus 7 (2012) running Android 5.1.1, the font shown is NOT Arial.
It looks like the font shown in the OP's fist post.

When I open the converted .pdf document in MS Word or in the
Foxit Reader program on my PC – or in the WPS Office app on my Nexus 7, it
looks perfect, with the proper Arial font.  (I don’t have the Acrobat
                Reader installed on my PC.)

Older documents created with MS Word using Arial font and
saved as .pdf still display correctly with the Arial font when I open them with
this version of Adobe Reader – Android on my Nexus 7.  Only the documents
I’ve created since the last Android reader update seem to corrupt the font.

Maybe something changed in MS Word, but the new converted .pdf
files display properly in other readers, so I don't think Word is the problem.

If I change the font in the Word document to something other
than Arial, the converted .pdf file displays correctly in Adobe Reader –
Android.  Of course I haven’t tested all possible fonts, but so far only
                Arial seems to be problematic.

                  Hey Dan,

Thanks for the detailed description of the issue. We looked into this issue when Jonas created this thread and our findings seem to match up with your description too. We are planning to send out a fix for this in the next update.

Firstly, nothing changed in Adobe Acrobat Reader (Android) to cause this behaviour. What seems to be have changed is that MS Word , given the following list of behaviours, switched from (1) or (3) to (2) when inserting the font in the created PDF :

                  1. Non-embedded font with name "Arial"

                  2. Non-embedded font with name "ArialMT"

                  3. Embedded font with name "Arial" or "ArialMT"

Adobe Acrobat Reader (Android) handles (1) and (3) but not (2) because it isn't PDF Standard compliant as "ArialMT" isn't a PDF Standard 14 font name. However, we are planning to add support for (2) in our next update in consistency with other PDF Viewers.

Would you mind sharing one such file with us so we can verify that our fix works for you ? If possible, please mail it to us at acrobat-android-support@adobe.com

                  Thanks !

                        Hi Dan,

Fix for this issue is going out in the next major update i.e. version 16.2

                        Thanks

                          Thanks Rohil,

I wasn’t too surprised either since this was just a minor update and there were no specifics in the release notes.  But I know you guys crave the feedback so you can expect my confirmation of the fix when it comes out.  Have a great weekend!

                          Dan
