Well, it sounds like the source location is not compatible with the system Or it does not have a proper permissions to making any changes.
Are you importing images from the external hard drive which was used on Windows machine?
Also refer the below discussion on the same.
Let us know if that helps.

Thanks Mohit. All the files are in the hard disk of the laptop itself. That's why I am a bit lost with this new problem. The routine I normally follow is to transfer photos in RAW/JEPG formats from my camera's card to my laptop for processing with Lightroom. Sometimes I transfer to an external hard disk that is formatted for OS/Mac (also for back ups). Never had any problem in accessing the files (photos) and importing them into Lightroom. I have updated catalogues, but problem persists.
I'd like to add that I have just run into this error message as well. I have not changed anything on my end. I've been using the same workflow for a while now Upload card to macbook >> Import to LR. It was very simple. Something is definitely wrong.
Yep, something is definitely wrong...with what I was doing. No idea how it got switched but I was trying to import as PNG. Once I switched to "Add", the issue went away. Duh. My mistake. That said, LR can be pretty clunky at times.
OUCH... that hurt. Yes, I was doing the same thing. I switched to Add too. Back to normal. Thanks.
