    Remove all paragraph styles and preserve formating

    BNRW Level 1

      I have a delicate question. Is it possible to delete all paragraph styles and preserving the formating of the document? If you remove character style, there is an option to preserve formating, but it is not when deleting paragraph style. Thanks

          Break Link to Style should do what you want. It's in the flyout menu of the Paragraph Styles Pallet. The same should work on Character Styles.

            this should apply [None] paraStyle and keep formats; the same with charStyles:

            app.activeDocument.stories.everyItem().texts.everyItem().applyParagraphStyle(app.activeDocument.paragraphStyles.item(0), false);
            app.activeDocument.stories.everyItem().texts.everyItem().applyCharacterStyle(app.activeDocument.characterStyles.item(0), false);

            and this is for Tables:

            try
                    {
            myTables = app.activeDocument.stories.everyItem().tables.everyItem();
            myTables.cells.everyItem().paragraphs.everyItem().applyParagraphStyle(app.activeDocument.paragraphStyles.item(0), false);
            myTables.cells.everyItem().paragraphs.everyItem().applyCharacterStyle(app.activeDocument.characterStyles.item(0), false);
                    }
                catch(e){}

              Why do you want to do that? It is not very recommendable.

                Willi,

                personally I do this "action" for years, every month, in the one "outsource" project. Believe or not, it's an optimal workflow for that special case. Original styles that come with the file are just useless for my purposes. So "never say never"

                OP may encounter similar situation... or not. Also it may be just a well known "XY problem".

                  You should be able to select all paragraph styles in the paragraph styles panel and click on the trashcan icon to delete them.

                  You'll be asked what style to replace them with. Select the first in the list: "No Paragraph Style".

                  At this point, a new option appears asking if you want to preserve formatting, which you do.

                  Check the "Apply to all" checkbox, and click OK.

                  That should do what you want.

                  The only caveat is that sometimes InDesign grinds to a halt for a few minutes when you do this. Not sure why, clearly a bug of some sort, or lack of optimization.
