The lines you talk about may be a sign of some corruption with your hardware however, and could mean the hard drive is failing or the ram is faulty? Try to see if the link helps, if not come back and try to post a screenshot of the lines to see what they look like?
Step 10 is a bit skeptical to me "(1) Create the folder with that name in the location indicated in the registry entry." There is only one "my pictures" in the registry. So I create another folder of some sorts, I'm I reading that right?
Here's the funky picture. Computer and hard drive seem to be functioning fine, although I am no computer technician. The hard drive isn't even a year old yet.
Age is no indication of hard drive failure, I had problem with a month old one! Are all the photos the same, and when did this start? Make sure you have backups just in case!
No the other photos are fine, it was just this one. It started the happened the same time my catalog started having the "assertion failed" error. So about a week ago.
