Ensure that the destination tab (right-side of import dialog) is open and that the destination folder is correctly identified. The folder you are copying into should also have read & write privileges.
thanks 99jon, I have done this, I have a destination folder , its exactly the same workflow as I was doing before when i had the free trial but it doesn't import, tried several cards and checked with a friend also who uses lightroom. The upgrade of the new lightroom was interrupted with a network error so wondering if this is the problem but I've tried upgrading again via the link that is sent from adobe and still having problems importing.
Are you using Windows or Mac? What operating system?
HI I am using latest mac book pro , os x el capitan, it worked on the free trial so why not now? thanks. Have to go out will pick up any replies in a couple of hours,

Launch finder and go to:
Applications >> Adobe Lightroom
Click on the Adobe Lightroom folder to highlight it and press Cmd+I to launch the info dialog. Check that read and write privileges are set for Admin and your user name. Otherwise click the lock icon to change.
Also repeat for the application inside that folder:
Applications >> Adobe Lightroom >> Adobe Lightroom.app
Hi thanks 99jon,you are absolutely correct it was to do with the permissions, and thanks for putting me on the right path to fixing it, the destination had for some weird reason changed during the upgrade, so the raw files went to some file in the hard drive that didn't have permissions rather than pictures where it used to go (until the upgrade). If anyone else has this error 604 code, please look to see where the images are going, its not always easy to tell straight away, I saw it went into the hard drive and initially assumed it would be going into pictures where it is did before the upgrade, it would be useful if adobe had this error code with an explanation of what it means on their list for trouble shooting, but couldn't find any information anywhere. It caused me a lot of delays with the hundreds of images that I'm working on for various deadlines, but thank goodness its fixed, very happy
