InDesign tries to connect to the server to check the URLs in the Hyperlink Panel.
Uncheck in the Hyperlink panel to update the state automatically (last menu entry in the panel menu).
Unfortunately that did not fix it.
You really have too many hyperlinks in your document.
Ideally it should not lag there as well, but as you are saying you noticed a performance degradation. I would like to have a look at it.
I tried to reproduce it locally, but seems not able to reproduce it at my end.
Can you please share your document with me. That would be of great help.
Thanks in advance.
I think I might have the problem: The catalog layout is using many copied/pasted elements from two prior catalogs, including hyperlinked graphics. They all are mostly set with 'Shared Hyperlink Destination' turned on. Indesign seems to be cross-referencing those older documents when the Hyperlinks window is open. When I open the new document it takes ages, and the open dialog lists these older files many times.
Things that cure the lag:
Open the older documents as well as the new one.
Rename/move the older documents to break the cross reference.
I did not realize what 'Shared Hyperlink Destination' was doing so always left it turned on. Apparently it needs to be off to avoid an ever multiplying cross-reference build-up.
So, is there a way to globally fix all these links to turn 'Shared Destination' off, or do I have to fix them one at a time?
@Monica Singh, I'm having the same problem after the most recent update from CC. Can I get assistance as well?
I am still having this issue with the hyperlinks panel, and I have made a point of unchecking the "Shared Destination" box on every link. And, Monica, to be told that there are too many hyperlinks in the document is total BS. YOU NEED TO FIX THIS PROBLEM. It's been going on since at least 2014. That's two years, Adobe. At this point I have to open the file in CS 6 to get the hyperlinks panel to work. I'm thinking that there's not any point to upgrading the software, if it's not working properly.
Thanks Diane!! i have recieved your mail.
I have escalated this issue on very high priority. Though, I connot promise anything about fix. But, yes we will work on this as soon as possible.
Also, we may seek your help, if required.
I want to find the root cause of the issue. To find out root cause, we need some documents, books on which you are facing the performance degradation. Please share the documents, books or any other resource to email@example.com.

Please say this issue is being worked on. I am going bat-sh!t crazy trying to edit hyperlinks, and I'm on a deadline. I would gladly send you a file if it would help get this fixed. I have three more documents to work on, 80 pages each, and I'll be institutionalized if I have to work like this.
Hi Phil and Laura,
Please try InDesign CC 2017, the issue is fixed in this release.
Let me know your observations.

A fix has been provided to resolve this issue.
Please try the steps mentioned at this troubleshooting page https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/kb/crash-hyperlinks-panel-quick-apply.html to resolve your issue, if still facing.
Let me know if it works for you.
The plug in is not working in my ID ElCapitan 10.11. whatever. The plug in tells me the update is successful but it's not.
My ID 2017 still keeps crashing when I choose Interactive -> Hyperlink. I have really old hyperlinks in this document and they need to be deleted. I can't access.
Clearly there's a conflict somewhere. This was a print catalog originally, and the original designer 8 years ago put in hyperlinks that are now ancient. I want to publish this online. I've applied hyperlinks throughout the document before finding the Hyperlink panel. (all new for me.)
Where is the conflict? How do I backtrack to troubleshoot. Could be so many issues.
