When I insert an audio file M4a AE won't let me listen to the playback at all! I need help asap as I'm working and have a project deadline.
Bascially: I just need to hear my audio file in After effects within my timeline

Use some other application -- like Premiere -- to export audio only. wav or aiff, no mp3 or any crap like that. Use the audio in AE. It'll; get you by.
AE does not like compressed audio files very much. While the format may be supported the particular compressions game where your audio file may have problems. Try converting the file to a 16-bit 48 kHz wav file in Audition for the Adobe Media Encoder. That is the standard audio format for video production.
