    Fantastic performance increase

      On my ThinkPad P70 with Quadro  M300M graphics card I just discovered a huge performance gain by turning off "use graphics processor" under preferences - performance. Just thought I'd let you know. It seems everything is affected by this.

          Hi SteenHK ,

           

          This means your Graphics card is not compatible with Photoshop because it is either not supported or is outdated.

          Please refer Troubleshoot Photoshop graphics hardware (GPU) and video card issues

            The Quadro M300M is the newest of all the Quadro laptop cards, that might

            be why it's not supported. Hope it will be soon.

              It may be that your Quadro simply has an outdated driver. Go to the video card manufacturer's website and download the latest driver and install it. Turn on your GPU and see if your performance improves.  Your card's manufacturer may still have updates to do if this doesn't fix it.

                Hi Rikk

                I am checking for new drivers every 2 weeks, because the graphics card is

                bran new. But still this has not helped. But turning it of in Lightroom,

                helps definitely.

                  Are you using LR 6.6 or CC 2015.6 and the below graphics driver?

                    I am using latest Lightroom version 2015.6 Release, just checked.

                     

                    Ther driver you send URL for, is not a partner (Lenovo) certified driver

                    and therfore it cannot be installed with my Thinkpad P70. But there was

                    a new driver in the Lenovo updates for the P70.

                     

                    This driver seems to work better than the previous in general. But with

                    the adjustment brush tool it definitely seems slower with the graphics

                    driver enabled in LR.

                      After a reboot and some aditional work I can say that the latest

                      certified Lenovo driver 10.18.13.5474, dated 07/02/2016 works very good

                      and fluently, also with the Adjustment brush...

                        After working some time in LR things start to slow down again, also

                        using the adjustment brush, which does not update the strokes in real

                        time. However a restart of LR solves this for some time, approx editing

                        of 2 to 3 images.

                         

                        Disabling "Use graphics processor" solves this, even though there seems

                        to be a small decrease in overall performance.

                         

                        If this behavior is due to the Quadro M3000M driver or LR I don't know.

                          Are you using an external monitor or the laptops LCD display only?

                           

                          Your P70 laptop has two graphics adapters: Intel Intergrated Graphics and Discrete Nvidia Graphics adapter. Scroll down to section titled 'NVIDIA Optimus Technology' here: https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/n1cdh07w.txt

                           

                          You may need to change the BIOS setting as outlined here to use the Nvidia Discrete Graphics adapter: Using nvidia display adapter sted integrated graphics with onlocation

                            While doing the tests today I have only used the internal LCD.

                             

                            As I wrote the decrease in performance is gradual in the way that if LR is

                            restarted performance is fine and then after some editing fex using the

                            brush for 3-4 images in large areas, then the brush starts to lag

                            considerably. If I then restart LR everything is fine again.

                             

                            To me it seems as if something in Lightroom is causing this, some kind of

                            bottleneck issue..

                              It sounds like the GPU or CPU may be over-heating from intensive usage during LR editing. You can download the free CPU HardwareMonitor and check  the CPU and GPU temperature while working in LR.

                                No, I'm sure that's not the case, it would be very obvious from the sound

                                of the fan, which really talks when rendering 4k video fex. Using LR

                                doesn't raise fan noise at all..

                                 

                                If it was overheating, taking a pause would help out, but it doesn't. Only

                                remedy is to restart LR.

                                 

                                The M3000M card is one of the high end cards and should easily cope with LR

                                editing.

                                 

                                I think it's a LR compatability issue of some kind with this new card that

                                Adobe should look into with Nvidia. Not be negative, but we've seen issues

                                before.

                                      I have attached the HW monitor data for editing of 5 images with the

                                      adjustment brush in auto mask mode. It does not look like any

                                      overheating or other stressed hardware issues. In the last 2-3 images

                                      the brush started to lag considerably..

                                        The Nvidia M3000M GPU is being used and NOT the Intel Integrated GPU, so that's good!.

                                         

                                        Graphics Processor Info:

                                        I tested this using an Adjustment Brush with +1.0 Exposure on a set of 10 images that were already edited. After I applied the Adjustment Brush to about 5 image files it started to lag badly, so I can duplicate what you are seeing. On my system it happens with GPU enabled or disabled and appears to be a memory leak.I have 12GB of memory and as you can see below the Adjustment Brush edits left 2,208 MB Available. Simply "browsing" image files in the Develop module will cause the memory leak. Open Task Manager as below and set to 'Always On Top' and watch the 'Available' number as you use the Adjustment Brush or browse images in the Develop module. The only way to recover the used memory is to close and relaunch LR. This is probably due to changes added in LR 6.6 and CC 2015.6 for faster Develop module browsing. It now caches the preview for the image file on either side of the currently viewed file.

                                          I forgot to add that at the Photoshop Family forum it was discovered you can recover memory without restarting LR. Simply "minimize LR, wait 2-3 seconds, and then "maximize" LR. It's a little quicker than closing and restarting LR.......at least until a fix is available.

                                            Again not to sound negative, but when do Lightroom users get a version

                                            without bugs of some kind? I can't remember when that last happened.

                                             

                                            I pay my monthly creative suite fee and I would expect that what I get for

                                            that is tested and working fully in a production environment, if not 100%

                                            then just 99 or maybe 98. But a memory leak causing serious lag and slow

                                            downs , thats not ok. Adobe user's are not test labs.

                                             

                                            Can't forget last time we had the trouble with the preview in develop

                                            module. It took more than 3 months to solve. And when I first wrote about

                                            it, nobody at adobe had noticed it.

                                             

                                            So get on that horse and fix the bugs please.

                                              My sentiments as well! BTW I am not an Adobe employee. The ACP title just means Adobe has recognized my user-to-user contributions. All I can do is make suggestions and the place to do it is on the Photoshop Family feedback forum. I suggest adding your 'Me To' vote below so it gets more attention. At this moment there are only 5 people claiming they have this "issue" and 18 simply 'Following' the post. I just added my vote so now it's 6........
