Catalog file needs to be small PDF?

I have a catalog I've built in InDesign, full of hi resolution graphics and it numbers roughly 136 pages.  Images are linked files not embedded.

When I export into an Adobe PDF, the file size is very large.

I have been trying every way I can think of to reduce file size both using Acrobat compression and even exporting all the pages as jpegs and then combining into a single PDF in Acrobat.

But, no matter what I do I can't get a good working PDF below about 40megs.  (I can get it lower, but the text and art become so pixelated I can't read it).

Is it possible to get a PDF smaller in size and still have it usable to a reader?  Or have I just reached the max compression available for this?

      thanks
