Have you updated your computer operating system?
Yes I have, to Windows 10. However, I do recall trying to upload files a few weeks previous to this when running Win 8 and it did the same but at the time put it down to a faulty card reader. I'm guessing it was the same problem then too, it simply didn't see the files.
The 50d needs LR4.6
Go to the menu:
Help >> Updates
Sorry for confusion you can't update LR beyond 4.4.1
Camera Raw minimum is 4.6
Can you copy the files to your computer into a folder and import using "Add"
No it still won't see them in their natural CR2 format. I have to open them in Canon's DPP (which sees them normally) then convert to .tiff into a separate folder, then import the .tiff files to LR before I can work on them, which is a massive ball ache!

Updates to W10 are automatic. I’m wondering whether that may have changed something. I’m loath to suggest going back to an earlier restore point. I would first try deleting the prefs.
From the LR menu go to:
Edit >> Preferences >> Presets (tab)
Then click the button “Show Lightroom Presets Folder”
Double-click on Lightroom and then double-click on Preferences
At this point you should close Lightroom
Inside the preferences folder, right-click on: Lightroom 4 Preferences.agprefs and choose rename.
Change the name to:
Lightroom 4 Preferences.agprefs.OLD
Or navigate manually, substituting your own user name unless you have stored presets with the catalog.
After renaming the agprefs file, close the preferences folder and open Lightroom again. A new preferences file will be re-created automatically on re-launch.
If that makes no difference you can delete the newly created prefs file and remove the word old from the original.
Thanks, I'll give it a go!
