Using a 2015 27-inch iMac: I need to use an older model analog to digital converter to capture some old VHS tapes. It only has a Firewire 400 port on it so I need to go from a Firewire 400 cable into a Firewire 800 adapter, connected to a firewire 800 to thunderbolt adapter.
1. will doing this degrade the quality of my video in anyway by being converted from FW400 to FW800 to TB?
2. anyone know anything about the ADVC-55 model? Should I consider looking at newer models for better quality, or will the ADVC-55 obtain good quality?
I don't know about that unit specifically, or if the FW400-FW800-Thunderbolt chain will be reliable, but if there are problems it would probably work better to use something more current. I've been using an Elgato Video Capture device which has worked well for my purposes. It's still supported on recent Macs, and all it needs is a USB port.
