What exactly is the error message when you try to import?
There is no error message: the camera simply does not appear on the list of devices from where I may import photos.
A camera Upgrade to Mac OS X El Capitan has nothing at all to do with LR. LR is its own program and does not use OS X camera files at all.
That upgrade is for the Built In Photos app. Not LR.
I guess it depends what the OP meant by "after upgrade to MacOS El Capitan", as it could be interpreted two ways:
1. The recent Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update for El Capitan, or
2. Upgrading from an earlier version of OSX to El Capitan, which might be more likely as there have been similar reports of cameras not being detected after upgrading to El Capitan.
Good question. I don't know. The last time I used LR was in December 2015. Since then I both upgraded to El Capitan and installed the Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update this month (but those RAW updates were not for the Canon 7D).
Before posting here I searched and came across multiple cases of cameras (both my model and others) not being "seen" in LR. But never saw a solution to this - other than using a card reader or uploading the photos using e.g. Image Capture. Both of these are workarounds, not fixes. A search of the Adobe forums turns up multiple identical issues.
Thank you for taking the time to post a reaction. I expect the problem to be linked to the upgrade to El Capitan As you rightly point out, the "Digital Camera RAW Updates" have nothing to do with LR.
Hence the title of my post; after upgrading to MAC OS X 10.11 (aka El Capitan) I cannot import photos from my Canon EOS 7D into LR as it doesn't show up in the Import dialog list of available devices.
I am now running version 10.11.5, fully up to date. I had wiped my hard disk before installing so there are no old files from previous versions of MAC OS (or LR for that matter)
