The .lrprev files are NOT your backups!
They are the previews for all your work in the current catalog.
If you have a need to delete Previews (such as corruption issues) then you would delete the parent folder of the Previews-
LR CATALOG\LR6 CATALOG Previews.lrdata
After deleting this folder, Lightroom will again re-create or re-build previews as you work.
Your BACKUPS are saved in a location or your choosing- the option you set in the Backup dialog.
If you have never changed this location, then Lightroom will use a default location that is a Folder called appropriately "Backups" in the same parent folder as the Lightroom Catalog ( .LRCAT file)
Backups are saved as .ZIP files within a folder named with the DATE the backup was made. You can selectively delete the dated folders, preserving several to allow restoration of a catalog in the event of catalog corruption.
To answer your question- Try deleting the 'Parent' previews folder in Dropbox- which will also delete the odd named sub-folders. If the OS system says the file is too large for the 'trash' continue anyway to delete.
Thanks for the quick reply. However, it does not address the issue at hand.
I fully understand the difference between PREV files and Catalog files, etc. My interest is in deleting the entire backup for one or more catalogs. It is the length of some of the filenames/path (in this case a PREV file(s)) this is the blocking the delete process.
I never get to the stage of an warning that says "the file is too large for the trash". I'm familiar with that message and know to press on to delete without the ability to restore a file from the Recycle Bin.

Thanks, wobertc. That Dropbox link is the best explanation I've seen. Hope it helps others who might come across this forum post.
