Discretionary line breaks causing bad URLs

I tried using a discretionary line break to fix an extra long URL in InDesign, but when I try to convert hyperlinks, I get a bad link, or if I copy the text and paste it into a browser, I get a URL not found. It's apparently keeping the discretionary line break character in the hyperlink and messing up the link.

Here's one of the unwieldy URLs I'm dealing with:

      http://www.uspreventiveservicestaskforce.org

It appears multiple times in the document, so I put discretionary line breaks in all the URLs so they will format properly, but that's useless if the links don't work. I'm stuck formatting each one with a manual line break.

Is there a solution to this problem?
