You don't HAVE to do anything. However, if you want a later version of Lightroom then you are using now then it will be necessary for you to upgrade. There are two upgrade paths you can follow. You could upgrade to Lightroom 6, which is a standalone program. New features that have been added since Lightroom 6 was first released are not included. There have been updates to Lightroom 6 that provide support for new cameras, that there are no new features. The other path is to subscribe to the creative cloud photography plan. This includes Photoshop and the latest version of Lightroom with several new features that have been added. If you decide you want to purchase Lightroom 6 then when/if Lightroom 7 is released with new features you will have to choose whether or not to purchase another upgrade to get the new features. The choice is yours. There isn't a wrong choice. It's all simply a matter of what appeals most to you.
The question then is, where is the link for the upgrade? Whenever I go looking for the upgrade from 5.7 to 6, I keep getting looped back to Creative Cloud. Since I already have standalone versions of programs, I don't need CC. Where can I purchase the upgrade?
The link to upgrade to Lightroom 6 is:
At that web page, to purchase Lightroom 6, you scroll down to Photoshop Lightroom (that's the official name), click on buy, then on the next screen change Full to Upgrade.
