Without workflow, system and comp details I have no idea what may be going on. I'm having no problems rendering.
Try building a new comp that is say 20 seconds, put one layer in the comp, no effects, no animations and try a test render using one of the standard presets. If that works try rendering the same comp to the format that is giving you problems. If that doesn't work, and you have reset everything except the format to the default values this will tell you there is a bug.
If you can get a test render to work then open up the comp that is giving you problems, select all of the layers and press the U key twice and then start going though the modified properties one layer at a time (most suspicious layer first) and turn things off or reset values until you get a successful render. When you have figured out what is causing the problem be sure and file a detailed bug report.
You Could Try to Free up RAM : Edit -> Purge -> All memory , Then Render it again.
Try to Add it to Adobe Media Encoder and see if you get any new result
if nothing works, Could you please submit a screenshot for the Timeline
I have rendered a comp of 20 seconds with just black in it with standard HD full quality animation settings. In my comp that doesn't go beyond two seconds there is just an exr sequence, no added effects. I have tried importing these in two separate bits as two layers and as one but each time it simply doesn't render beyond 2 sec. It makes the movie 2 secs and disregards the remaining frames, it doesn't give an error message but the render cue says failed so it knows it didn't do the full thing.
Having just checked all the image files it turned out one was faulty and this caused the problem. thanks for the advice, going through it step by step helped to find the problem.
thank you, I managed to fix the problem, see my reply above. I don't know how to render in Adobe Media Encoder. Is this available within after effects itself?
Ya sure, you can add composition into Adobe media Encoder directly by selecting the coposition first , then got to:
composition -> add to adobe media encoder Queue
