    Combo Box adding 56 K???

    C-Rock Level 2
I have a combo box that's adding 56K to the size of my swf file. I'm exporting the actionscript classes in frame 2. Is there an alternative to this huge combo box?

      Thanks!

the only alternative is to make one from scratch, by yourself.
one of the reasons why we seldom use component...

You have entered the world of v2 UI Components, my friend.

            > I'm exporting the actionscript classes in frame 2.

It doesn't really matter what frame you export them to: the SWF needs
them in order to use the ComboBox.

There are other 3rd party Components. Try ...

            http://flashcomponents.net/

... for starters. The thing about the native Components is that any first
one of them adds a huge chunk to the SWF; after the first, additional
Components tend not to be so bad, because they share a lot of base code.

I guess I'm not sure how to build one from scratch. Any ideas of how to start or any tutorials. It's for a form, for the user to select a state, so i'm not sure i can get around it.

I don't remember flash mx pro 2004 adding that much for the combo box component.

Dave, that flash site doesn't work...

              Thanks for your help

Honestly, UI Components are pretty advanced. I'm not sure what your
                comfort level is with programming.

It's the same Component. Flash MX 2004 also had the v2 Components,
which are more robust than the previous incarnation.

It works for me. Where are you getting stuck?

it tells me i need to have flash player 7 or better installed and i have the latest 8 installed. something wrong with their detection?

i'm pretty decent at flash, i have quite a bit of experience. i would like to try to make my own combo box. i don't need to add all of the classes and listeners that get exported with a comboBox. I'd like to make one that can populate and be able to send out the data or the label.

any ideas of where to start?

Anyone have any idea how to make your own combo box or downsize one that's already there?

                      C-Rock,

There's really no way to "downsize" the native v2 UI Component ComboBox.
It is what it is, which means it includes the v2 architecture, which is what
                      weighs so much.

As for building your own ... shoot, I haven't tried to build one myself,
but off the top of my head, I would imagine you'd want quite a few movie
clips ... one for the button that opens the combo box; one for the part that
drops down when you click the button; a handful for the scrollbar in case
the drop-down part is overly long, etc.; a mask to hide away parts that
aren't needed at the moment ... it would take some thought, I'm sure.

As for making Components in general, I've always found this UltraShock
                      tutorial helpful.

                      http://ultrashock.com/tutorials/flashmx2004/components.php

I don't have have any trouble visiting the Flash Components site
                      ( http://flashcomponents.net/). I also have the Flash Player 8 plug-in,
though I have successfully visited the site with Flash Player 7, and 8.5.

You know, you don't have to built the actual COMPONENT, just a movie clip with some drop down
and hard type links. It does not have to be dynamic or anything. Just look alike.... or totally
                        different, your preference.
A simple movie clip with links and some basic animation will not be more than 5kb...
