I'm at my wit's end. I've scoured these forums and have pretty much tried every step I've found. My OS is fully updated. Lightroom is fully updated. Firmware is fully updated. My camera is on the supported camera list. My laptop sees my camera but Lightroom doesn't so the cable is fine and I'm able to import. In my camera's setup menu, there is no USB option through which I can select PTP.
But, tethered capture is my goal. Not importing.
It's been a few years, but I have used tethered capture with this laptop(MacBook Pro, mid 2010), Lightroom 4, and this camera before(Nikon D300s) with no issues. The only thing I can think of is that the upgrade to OS X El Capitan(10.11.5) somehow interferes with it. Other than switching over to Lightroom CC, I am out of ideas. I'm perfectly happy with 4.4 and it meets all my needs, so I'd rather not have to do that.
Call in support isn't available so I have no choice but to use the forum.
The latest OS X upgrade broke the old Nikon tethering. This required an SDK fix from Nikon then a new version of Lightroom to use the new SDK. To get tethering to work with OS X and Nikon cameras, you need to upgrade to very recent version of LR 6.x. (I am a Windows user so I don't remember the exact version of LR 6 you need.)
