Why LR reports original photo exists when the photo actually is offline?

I'm working on a smart preview which I'm sure the source is offline at the moment. However the status text below the histogram indicates:"Original Photo". For making sure, I go to the library panel and request LR to show it to me in Finder(Mac OS), then it reports the image missing. Now two questions:

      1. Why does this happen?
      2. Since it's very misleading and even dangerous (Because you can easily output something for offset printing, thinking your DNG is capable of producing a 350 DPI output, while it's just a "smart preview", why there's no safeguard / warning for out-resolving a DNG file above its original pixel count-per-area?

      Kind regards,
