I`m considering to buy a new MacBook Pro (15", 2.8GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor, 16MB RAM) for mainly video edditing with Premiere Pro. I wonder if its GPU`s support Mercury Playback Engine? witch I have understod is important for maximum speed working with Premiere Pro.
The laptop I consider is using this two graphic cards:
In the list of system requirements for Premiere Pro; Premiere Pro System Requirements for Mac OS and Windows is says "AMD FirePro" recomended for GPU acceleration for Mac and AMD Radeon (as the Mac comes with) is listed under Windows. This makes me wonder if the new Mac is not supporting maximum speed for Mercury Playback Engine? In any case, I would appreciate views oppon whitch GPU card you guys would recomend for a MacBook to work the best with Adobe Premiere Pro?
There are two flavors of Mercury Playback Engine. One uses OpenCL which AMD cards are capable of using to boost performance, and the other is CUDA, which is only supported by NVIDIA cards as it is proprietary technology. In my experience, the CUDA is faster, but that may be my bias. I use Mac and PC, and always try to get the Mac's that have NVIDIA cards which seems to be very rare these days. The fastest AMD cards that Apple uses are the FirePro cards in the Mac Pro cans and therefore they recommend those to get the best speed out of Premiere on a Mac platform. However, I have the very laptop you are looking at, with the same AMD card, and it works great for editing with Mercury Playback. Hope that helps!
