Can you prevent an update from changing your files?

We are being forced to update to the cloud, but I am concerned because we will have to update the software once a year.  In the past when we updated from 2 to 4 and from 4 to 6, we always found changes in our files, whether it be text boxes moving, lines shifting, or fonts missing.  Something was always different.  Because our artwork is customer-approved, we would take months to proof every art file we have to make sure it was exactly as the customer approved it.  This meant hiring proofreaders just for this job.  Obviously, this isn't something I want to do on a yearly basis.  Is there any way to prevent files from changing?  Perhaps I am not aware of some feature in ID that would "freeze" the artwork?  Our print shop cannot print from pdfs, so that isn't an option for us.  Thanks for any help you can offer!
