I just updated to the latest versions of Adobe CC, which included a new version of Character Animator (4). Now, it will not open any of my old files and tells me that I can still open them in an older version. First of all, why is the new version not backward compatible? That's pretty standard these days. Secondly, how do I get the older version back on my machine? Isn't it a part of After Effects?
Unfortunately, being in an early preview phase has meant we've run into a few issues like this. Several deep structural changes were made, particularly with core behaviors like face tracking and draggables, that rendered old artwork incorrectly. While this is better for Preview 4 users and beyond, sadly this means Preview 3 and lower puppets don't work. It's not a decision we made lightly, and the hope is we won't be forced to do it again.

However, I'd recommend taking the time to re-import and rig the puppets in Preview 4 for the additional functionality. Even my most complex puppets have only taken 5-10 minutes to get back up and running, and overall the performance should be better, along with the new functionality like live streaming, tagging, and automatic separate draggable tracks.
Ok thank you. I appreciate the quick response.
