Yes, if she formats the sub-section numbers with a Character style (which she can nest into the existing Paragraph style), she can call the text formatted with the Character styles into a running head with a Running Header (Character Style) variable.

Logically, it's a yes, but I missed the fact that text variables suppress the auto-numbers. So thank you... and here's a link to the fix. Must say it's cumbersome setup, and maybe you have a better way?
