Drawn shapes and lines are transparent over background image problem!

Hey everyone, super novice here.  I'm trying to make a flyer in inDesign and for the background image I copied a picture that I basically converted to "bluescale" in Illustrator by changing the hues.  Now when I try to draw a line or shape over it, they all show transparent (see attached image), instead of being filled in.  When delete or toggle the visibility of the image, everything is fine.  How can I have the lines or shapes be solidly filled in?

A random line I'm trying to draw, for example.  Doesn't show up as black.
