Please tell us exactly what happens. If there is an error message, please quote the entire complete unedited word-for-word error message.
Thanks for wanting to help!
The following is what I do/what happens:
- I open Lightroom 5 and click on “Import…”
- I insert an SD card in memory card reader
- The previews of all photos are visible
- I select a range of photos, tick "Eject after import" and click “Import”
- Some or all photos are imported with the following messages:
- In the Library module of Lightroom, all photos are displayed with an exclamation mark in a black circle, which displays the following message:
According to another website, Lightroom 5 is compatible with Mac OS X 10.10. Not sure if this is correct and if possible, I would like to avoid going through the trouble of downgrading the operating system.
Could not be read indicates your Destination folder does not have write permission in your operating system. This could be because you (accidentally) changed the Destination folder in the Import Dialog box. If that's what happened, change it back.
If that doesn't work, you need to either
- change the permissions to WRITE permission on that exact Destination folder; or
- switch to a Destination folder that does have write permission
Thanks for the tip!
The only thing that has changed (the work flow was fine before) is that I have upgraded to Mac OS X 10.11 but just in case the upgrade caused other changes, I checked the properties of the destination folder (see below). It seems that I should still be able to read and write to this folder. Do you have any other ideas?
...and I did try to import to other folders that I frequently use to save various other files but got the same error code (i.e. "Can not be read...").
Try setting the permissiosn for Everyone to Read and Write (and as long as you're there, set it to Read & Write for wheel too)
Unfortunately, this does not work. I have changed the settings as per you instructions (see below) but still get the same error message (also included below). Furthermore, Adobe support advised that I should try to uninstall and re-install the software but that did not make any difference (and no problems were encountered with the actual installation the first time around).
Does the error message refer to the reading of the photo during import (i.e. from the SD memory card reader) or after import (i.e. from the destination folder).
Any other ideas?
Thanks for the tip but it turns out that the problem was actually reading rather than writing at import. I should have done some basic trouble shooting before but since the problem occurred after the upgrade to Mac OS X 10.11, I was sure that it was a compatibility issue between the operating system and Adobe Lightroom. When an upgrade to the latest version of Adobe Lightroom (6.6.1) did not solve the problem, I wanted to exclude any other potential sources of the problem and connected my camera directly to the computer instead of using the CF card reader (SanDisk) and it worked fine. Then I searched for online discussions about interworking problems between memory card readers and Mac OS X 10.11, and found quite a few. My first guess is that the firmware of the card reader needs to be updated but I have not yet found the right version and meanwhile, I can still import photos. Anyway, thanks for your help!
...and now the SanDisk memory card reader works again. However, the SanDisk firmware update tool does not support any releases beyond Mac OS X 10.9 for the time being. Therefore I had to connect the card reader to a PC in order to update the firmware but that was a minor problem.
