Re: Lightroom CC / 2015.6.1 hangs and freezes on Windows 10

    DustinF00 Level 2

I am experiencing MASSIVE lag and delays between image to image in the develop module - sometimes huge hangs and the screen goes BLACK and I have to wait 3-5 seconds.

sometimes I see an APPLICATION show up in the task bar that states "BEZEL" and sometimes I see an application show up that states "SHADOW" but its a mess - really horrible performance.

My entire system for Windows 10, LR Catalog (which is large, this happens on NEW small catalogs too), and RAW files are all on NVME PCIe drives. This also happens on the NVIDIA GTX780 card and then when that card died I thought it was that card that caused my issues but it happens on a brand new GTX1070 card that is now installed.

I've turned ON and OFF HyperThreading with no effect, Turned ON and OFF the GPU accelleration to no effect.
I've Turned ON and OFF the Windows Defender and other Virus/Spy/Malware detectors from MSFT - and those are the only ones installed on the system.

          Hey DustinF00,

Can you share a screenshot of the icons in your system tray? Also, any videos that you have will be helpful for others in the forums. I also noticed that you don't have the latest driver for that graphics card. There have been two updates since yours with the latest released Aug. 30th.

Do you have more information about your two monitors?

          Thanks.

          Melissa

Attached below are some computer details from Device Manager outlining the displays, the display adapter and CPU type.

            Screenshot 2016-09-06 17.06.40.png

Here is a screen cap of the icon tray - it should be clear that the icon with the yellow exclamation mark is a portable scanner that is not conncected at the moment, this is windows 10 Second Edition, The Display adapters have since been upgraded, one drive is loaded but not signed into, Dropbox is loaded and signed into and doesnt sync any lightroom files or folders, BT is NOT in use and the first icon is a backup software that runs on scheduled times that I am not at the computer and only copys the RAW folder to another NAS device.

            Screenshot 2016-09-06 17.06.40-icontray.PNG

I am working on getting the performance problems on video in a better way - it is clear to me that Lightroom does NOT grab the resources its being handed with this type of build computer (lots of speed on SSD, RAM, and CPU) and sometimes is glitched bad.

My key complaints are image to image time delay/waiting for the images to be accessible in the edit panel and then on batch export Lightroom will flash to a black screen, sometimes show a new task in the task bar called "bezel" and sometimes called "shadow".

Running windows performance monitor doesnt show anything else using resources or CPU to take away from lightroom, It's just lightroom waiting on something I cannot figure out what it is...

Here is the latest output of the System Info from the Help of LR - I even moved the LR Catalog around with no difference in large quantity image edits.

I also turned off hyper-threading to just see if there as anything else that could be causing this. It did not change performance.

From your description of the screen blacking out I'd guess it's a video driver/card problem.  You have a new card and the newest driver.

it seems odd that disabling and enableing Use Graphics Processor in LR / Prefs / Performance wouldn't make any difference.  What I would expect is that while things might not work in either mode, the symptoms would be a little different.  If the system acts exactly the same then it seems that OpenGL is not being used at all, since that is what turning on and off Use Graphics Processor controls.

Something to try would be vary the number of resolution of the monitors you have connected.  The first thing to try would be set the low-res monitor as the primary monitor then actually disconnect the high-res one and reboot and see if things are at least a little faster.

Also watch the CPU usage when you flip to a new image with the GPU on and off, and see if more is used when the GPU is off, or not.

Hopefully the previous Adobe employee would be able to get you a special copy of LR with some instrumentation turned on to log things--I don't know if such a version exists, but it'd be nice if it did and someone could have you run it for them to see where the bottle-neck is.

I think from what I can decipher, this is a memory management thing - when using a large total of images in a develop module some how Lightroom takes up about 4-6GB of RAM - it doesnt know what to do with itself.

It also doesnt peg and pin any CPUs or GPUs during image to image transition (still laggy) and I know I have a rather large catalog but optimizing doesnt change most of this image to image lab and the large images in develop module still seem to drag it down.

I really would like the engineers that figured out how to code PRemier and Photoshop for multiple CPU and large RAM use would get assigned to fixing LR.

And finally - yeah - it would be great to get LR in a debug/logging mode and see where its deficiencies are...

Performance is still way out of whack though - I used to be able to break up my exports - if I had to export 650 RAWs to JPG - I would take them in 300 or so groups - and then export each group of images, setting up 3 parallel tasks - I cannot even get the second batch to start up without some massive lag... Lightroom is stuck on something - I dont know if its the 64GB or RAM it sees or the 14+ cores CPU or its not expecting the SSD disk speed I've given it access to

Do you not have 64GB of RAM?  LR using up 8GB of RAM seems normal if you have a big catalog and exporting a bunch of photos.  In the portion of the video I'm looking at, you don't show the memory usage from before you started the Export, but the memory is going up and down somewhat during the few seconds you do show.  I'm also not seeing what the virtual-memory swap file size is, but maybe I missed it.

Not using 100% CPU just means that LR is getting slowed down by the disk-I/O (even though to an SSD).  I don't think LR uses the GPU during Export.  With spinning hard disks instead of SSDs, LR could run more things in parallel because of the disk latency but now the SSDs are fast enough getting it data that I think it's maxing out the I/O bus.

That shouldn't make the screen go black, though, and it's interesting it's only the LR portion that's black, not the entire screen because we can still see the task bar.

Did you upgrade Windows 10 from Windows 8.x or is this a fresh install?

This is a fresh install of Windows 10 Second Edition and the disks where the RAWs are and the Catalog are all high-speed NVME PCIe SSDs - these are ridiculously fast.

The Machine does have 64GB of RAM.

These are the READ and WRITE speeds on the SSD's installed in this computer.

I have encountered similar problems with AMD cards, I have to reinstall win, sometimes it appears more than once, sometimes not. I think due to unstable power line, or the problem could come from your LCD display.

Check the LCD screen wire, check the PSU, cables to connect from the LCD Case, I do not think the problem is in the Video Card

Hi, Thank you for your reply but the LCD, cable or power supplies are not the cause at this time. The entire LCD does NOT go black, the video shows that Windows TaskBar is still visible - and only the Lightroom main application window goes black, the Lightroom Window Frame is still open and the Lightroom Windows Frame reads the Lightroom name.

I have been building computers for 20 years and this computer is the most power ful I ever built in the last 4 years - Adoble Premier, Photoshop all work properly and seem to know how to access and perform well with the speed and power available to it...

Try the following to see if it works better for you. The workaround will make Lightroom use less computing resource (disk i/o, RAM and CPU) when the export is running in the background. This will allow Lr to be more responsive during that time:

                              1. Open Lightroom.
                              2. Invoke Lightroom > Preferences... menu command
                              3. When the Preferences dialog appears, select the Presets tab.
                              4. Click on the button labeled “Show Lightroom Presets Folder...”
                              5. Lightroom will reveal the root preset folder in the Finder/Explorer.
                              6. Now goto http://adobe.ly/2aKPUhq and download the config.lua file and copy it into the root preset folder at step 5. The config.lua file will turn off the under-the-hood concurrent export sessions intended to speed up the export on high end machines (4 cores or higher).
                              7. Relaunch Lr and see if you can still reproduce the crash/hang on export.
                              8. Remove or rename the config.lua from the root preset folder after the experiment (to restore to the original Lr 6.6.1 behavior). If it works out for you, you can leave this workaround in place while we investigate the issue based on the crash dump.

I tried placing the file in both places of my presets folder, the one with the stored catalog and the one in the windws/users/appdata folder.

I saw no different in performance, I saw all 14 cores rise with use on an export and I continue to see Lightroom go into " (not responding) at the top title bar if I decide to try to scroll through the files in the roll while its performing an export.

I was having similar performance issues on a system similar to yours.  Seemed to start after a CC update. I finally went into Adobe CC and uninstalled LR then reinstalled it.  Problems cleared up.  Don't know why.  If you haven't done this give it a try.

Storing the presets in the catalog does not affect the placement of the config.lua file. After putting the config.lua in place, goto the Lightroom>System Info...  You should see it includes an entry like the follows:

                                      Config.lua flags:

                                      disableAdaptiveConcurrentSessions = true

Do you always experience the performance problem when there is one or more export sessions running in the background? It seems to be the case shown in the video. If there is no concurrent export tasks in the background, is the performance ok?

I experience performance issues even when an export is not happening. without an export running, I still an image to image selection delay of many seconds before the editor applet can be used and then when the editor applet is finally available I can grab sliders and drag them and they do not drag with the mouse but drag afterwards, in fact I can drag a bunch of different sliders in all different directions and none of them actually equal to my mouse moving when I drag them and then they will all move afterwards...

Maybe we need to set my expectations, although I never really remember this issue EVER before - maybe I can't scroll through images while a background export is happening ?

Maybe Lightroom isnt meant to have 1000 RAW files loaded into for my wedding work and edit 600 of them?

Maybe I have to treat it like when I used to burn CD ROM Disks in 1999 and leave the entire Lightroom App alone and not do anything until its done.

It's not clear to me where this issue - I am fully open to signing NDA and testing software releases or debug applications - my Full Time Day Job has a significant level of hardware and software testing involving platforms...

I will run the test again and look to make sure the settings have taken effect. I also hope to find the time take video to continue to troubleshoot this issue - its really a painful experience to use this software now.

I have just about the same issues as you DustinF00. In MHO, LR has just become a pretty unusable piece of software, sad really because it "was" really great. I shoot for a living, and most often don't have time to research "workarounds", which has become the new standard for Adobe products. I actually have work to do, not time to sit around f-ing with my computer to make some software work correctly. And even if I did have time to F-around, I would rather do something else than chase workarounds and fixes. I never update CC until just about when the next version is getting released, because I have work to do and cant afford to cause my self hours of tracking down BS from an update. Yes, this is a rant, sort of. Fact is, LR performance issues exist. Perhaps they should dump all the loaded crap like Map and Book, and face recognition, and buttons for facebook and flicker and all those other useless things, and get back to making a photo management and editing software, like it was before LR5, just a thought. I almost got out my LR1 DVD and loaded it the other day because I have work to do.

I have a pretty fast PC, M.2's, SSDs, 64gmem, i7 8 core, 2 internal RAIDS of about 12TB each, water cooled, big fans, GTX980, all the good ****. I can edit in Premiere with 6 mulitcam angles, with multiple audio tracks, from different sources, with all sorts of effects, titles, slides, and so on.. But, I can only work in LR for about 25-35 mins before it starts to slow to basically a crawl, restart and start again. I've always been of the belief that software should just work, especially if you have a less than 2 year old machine. And that I shouldn't really have to do anything but install it, set it up, and use it.

Yes, I cannot say I disagree with you 2drumstix - it appears to lag really fast and we have similar setups with lots of RAM and fast SSDs - it really seems LR cannot handle the threading its been provided and must be choking some where.

And yeah - I am not that great at premier, but I am having no issues there, and that application sucks up as much power as it wants from the CPUs (14 cores, even 28 hyperthreaded) - so there it knows how to handle this.

I even have a more powerful GPU now - there has GOT to be a way to manage this GPU power, massive cores on CPUs and the RAM and SSD speeds...

We're going to learn somewhere two things:

                                                    1. MSFT changed the way its handling file I/O with its new defender/sercurity apps
                                                    2. Adobe let all the Lightroom engineers that could have made this is a better application work on something else and we now have the B-Team working on Lightroom in a sustaining role and not an innovation role to take advantage of the MultiCore/Multi-Threaded Lanes of data LR can now have...

We need Adobe and Microsoft and more to get together for issues like this...

Following up on this - I noticed with this config, the machine locks and holds at 1% rendering 1:1 previews - it seems to just sit there for ever - I took the config out and it can work back to the regularly garbage performance...

Has Adobe Lightroom set up a whole set of outlines for best performance blog post or spec sheet in support? I see a lot of bloggers like to say they know how to make lightroom work faster - but some or most of that seems to be about click and search stuff and less about actually wokring and knowing what to do.

The email notification for this forum does not work for me. So I need to remember to check back this thread for info. Sorry for the delay in response.

The config should have nothing to do with the 1:1 preview generation. It only affects the export if it is running. More questions:

                                                        1. Do you always running a dual monitor setup when you experience the problem? What happens if you only use the primary monitor.

                                                        2. So far your main issue is the multiple seconds delay when walking image from one to another, especially when you jump to the new image non-sequentially.

                                                        3. You also experience image rendering does not keep up with the slider change? Which setting is that?

                                                        4. Can tell if you have anything else that differs your setup from others? Like do you use any 3rd party plug-ins? Lots of presets?

I have always run dual monitors with this computer setup, I didnt start seeing these issues until moving into the further releases of Adobe Lightroom.

                                                          2a.

My main concern is Lightroom overall performance degredation in the last few releases, however I cannot pin it all on Adobe because I've also had the MSFT Anniversary update happen which doesnt seem to be the trigger for the slowness after the 72 hours of installing the original release of windows 10.

                                                          2b. A list of issues at the moment are as follows;

                                                          * Image to Image switching takes seconds for the control panels to become usable, then once they go from grayed out to highlighted there is a delay in dragging sliders.

                                                          * Image Export to JPG  renders the Lightroom application USELESS, it is 100% locked up exporting images, I used to batch multiple groups - now I cannot even select another group to batch export. Further issues during export is that the ADOBE LIGHTROOM Windows goes black -NOT WINDOWS, NOT THE SCREEN, just Adobe Lightroom, sometimes I even see (Not Responding) in the title bar window - which means the OS cannot even talk to the Adobe Lightroom application, during this lock up/freeze super slowness I sometimes see the Windows Task Bar show an additional application listed, sometimes its "SHADOW" and sometimes is "BEZEL" none of which I can capture on video yet.

                                                          3. I am not sure what you mean by rendering, I notice the sliders don't keep up with the cursor and they move after I've click/dragged the slider and move the mouise away - this can happen on everytthing from exposure, black point, highlights, clarity white balance, its on all of the sliders.

                                                          4. Only pluig-ins I am using right now is the SmugMug plug-ing, the Presets are VSCO, thats left panel work though and they load fast without issues, its everything in the develop module that seems tank on me.

The reason that I ask is that we heard some reports it might affect some customers when the GPU is turned on.

2b. If you are used to mange the multiple batch exports at the same time yourself, then leave the config.lua that I provided in place. The latest version of Lightroom by default tries to maximize the efficiency of a single export by doing multiple simultaneous exports under-the-hood for you automatically. The config.lua would turn that off to give you back the manual controls.

                                                            4. Can you try to do with and without the VSCO presets (by moving them to the desktop and then moving back) and see if it makes a difference. Some VSCO presets are camera model specific so it could affect the walking speed. How many total number of VSCO presets that you have installed?

I have to test the disconnecting of a second monitor.

I can change my workflow to massive single batch exports - but I gotta say this is still insane to me because of the power the computer has - Lightroom just take the power it has available - even with a single group of edits the performance is clearly not using the bandwidth in the computer.

I seem to see no difference walking in the develop module with or without the presets in the folders and loaded - I only have the standard  presets installed, non-camera specific ones, but they arent applied.

ALL drives in the computer are NVME - none of them have a read speed lower than 1Gbit.

Is there a start up switch, a log enabled version, I am willing to test to the extreme, willing to take on beta versions and willing to take on NDA so I dont talk about what we do publicly or privately. This is just totally horrific - I cannot work this way at all...

Should I expect to be able to - count seconds like 1-Mississippi 2-Mississippi 3-Mississippi all the way to 5 sometimes 8 and 10 before I get to edit an image (have access to sliders and use them?).

My main machine is a several year old laptop with an i7 (4 cores) that is much faster than this with raw files from a 24 MP camera. There seems to be something about really high power machines with large number of cores that Lightroom just can't deal with very well for some reason.
