Where to put catalog/cr cache in my setup

Where to put catalog/cr cache for best results

      Parameters:

Running lr 5 on hi-spec laptop, catalog of 20k cr2 files

      2tb 7200rpm internal drive w/photos

      128gb m.2 system SSD - average drive

500gb m.2 SSD secondary (also internal), good drive, new EVO

      All have 20%+ free

      Thanks for any advice.

Normally, a caching system works best when it is on a different drive from the source files. This means that you would normally want the LR catalog+cache on a separate drive from the original images.

I would put the photos on the 2 tb drive.

The 500gb SSD seems like reasonable place for the catalog and cache, but I don't know enough about the SSD drives to talk about frequent file updates that will happen with the catalog.

            As you said:

pictures on the 2Tb-disk, catalog on the 512Gb SSD. I suppose that the small disk holds the system and programs.

I tend to say that 20% free space on the disks will not be enough. You will soon run out of space on the photo-disk.
