Did Windows also get updated recently?
LR latest and Windows 10 latest and NVIDIA graphic drivers (not latest) work for me.
What is the config of your computer?
Yes, Windows also updated.
The LR catalog won't open, no matter what I do. It has worked fine until the latest update.
Windows 10 updated about 10 days ago. LR updated two days ago through my Creative Cloud subscription. The problem started with the LR update.
Regarding configuration -
I have Windows 10 and program files on the SSD drive and all my data files on an internal SATA drive. It's been configured like this since I bought the computer in January and has worked perfectly.
I have tried all the suggested 'fixes' on various forum threads:
1- I tried running LR as administrator (didn't work)
2- I tried changing permission under 'properties' (didn't work)
3- As mentioned already, I tried a backup copy (didn't work)
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm getting desperate. I have years of work in the LR catalog.
Any help or suggestions, anyone? everyone?
I can't lose 5 years of work!
I cannot open my LR catalog

Uninstall LR then reinstall. Your catalog is a separate file that won't be deleted or disturbed in any way by doing that.
Also by default LR backs up the catalog file once every week, unless you changed that normal setting or continually select the Skip button, so at the least you have a backup of the catalog file that is only 6-7 days old.
This is more than likely a permissions problem that was caused by the update to Windows.
To uninstall open the Creative Cloud desktop app and uninstall from there. Reboot the system then reinstall from that same app.
Or once uninstalled you can go here to get the original LR 2015/6 release then apply the 2015/6 .6.1 update.
Manually download the original release and then the .6.1 update. LR CC 2015 and LR 6 are the exact same program and the difference comes from how you are Signed In. So don't be confused if all you see is LR 6.x.x on the download link.
I had just finished uninstalling LR when I received the notice that you'd posted a reply.
I have backups and although I tried one, it didn't work.
When I uninstalled LR a few minutes ago, I selected to keep preferences. From what you're saying, perhaps that wasn't the best choice?
I rebooted and will now reinstall.
Thanks for the help. I hope it works.

Both Windows and Mac OS X are getting more restrictive in where files can be located. Some of those restrictions apply to where programs store critical files the program needs to run properly or open at all.
Hopefully the reinstall and the install of the 6.6.1 update will fix your problem.
Okay. I've fixed it, but I don't know which 'fix' actually did the trick.
As I mentioned before, I have my computer set up to have Windows on the SSD drive and my data on an internal SATA drive.
Here are the steps I took:
- Uninstalled LR through CC app.
- Shut down the computer for 1 minute (rather than restart.)
- Rebooted and then moved my picture file from the E:\ drive (SATA drive) back to its default location at C:\Users\carol\Pictures on the SSD drive.
- I reinstalled LR and was then able to open the catalog in its default location on C:\.
- I then closed LR and moved the picture folder back to E:\ drive and was still able to open it.
Either the LR update or the Windows update caused the problem. I don't know for sure which one.
Thank you for the help!
I sure hope this works for me. ALL of my catalog backups are there. LR just won't open any of my catalog back ups. So frustrating!
If you are using the CC or 6 version the backups are compressed into the ZIP format and will have a .lrcat.zip file extension. They have to be expanded back to normal catalog file with just the .lrcat extension.
I have tried to unzip them to no avail. How do I "expand" them. So frustrated!!!!!
What is the exact file extension? Please post the complete name of the backup file.
Please not that the backups are stored in folders with the date as the file name and the time it was created that looks like this, 2016-10-17 1546.
You have to open that folder to get at the compressed backup file and then Un Zip it. I use 7ZIP for all my Zipping and un-Zipping.
Those are what I am trying to back up from. I've unzipped, I've unzipped to different drives and tried from there. I know right where the files are and on which drive. I open the folder and there is a zipped file. I unzip it with the windows extractor and it gives me a blank looking page that says lightroom back up. When I open LR from that, it only gives me back to Jan 1, 2016. Last I saved my catalog was October 9, 2016. I find it very weird that this happened out of the blue. I wish windows 10 would NOT automatically download and install updates!
Then you should have a folder with the name of 2016-10-09 (Year, Month, Day) and then the time it was created in 24 hour format (or if your from across the pond 2016-09-10, Year, Day, Month).
So if you aren't seeing a folder with that name you should do a search of all your drives for a folder with that name.
If you are running Windows 10 Home there is no way to stop it completely and only one way to limit it. If you are running 10 Pro you can turn off the Auto Updates. But you have to jump through some hoops to do it.
Yes I am seeing a folder with names like that....when I open it I unzip the file lcat.zip and then there is only 1 file to choose from.....it appears to have a blank paper next to the file name....I cannot open with that catalog...or any of my other ones. I think I'll just call adobe when I have time. Thanks for trying to help me.
What do you you mean you can't Open it? Does it have the .LRCAT file extension?
Open LR and go to File > Open Catalog then Browse to that file that was Un-Zipped. Does LR open it? Do you see your images?
