Remember if it is LR 6 or 2015CC the backups are zipped so you will need to extract them first.

Why are you unable to open any backups? That is what they are for.
What operating system are you using?
Am unable to open a back up.
Why not? What happens when you try? What is the exact error message? (and what steps did you try to open the backup?)

Unzip Backup - Launch LR - File->open catalog -> navigate to backup catalog, open the .lrcat file.
I using current version, I sub to Creative Cloud. I'm windows 10.
When I try to launch LR I get this message:-
The Lightroom catalog "Lightroom Catalog" is corrupt and cannot be used or backed up until its is repaired. The repair operation may take sevral minutes....."
I click "repair catalog" then get this message "Unfortunately the catalog nbamed "Lightroom catalog" cannot be repaired. Please use recent back up copy of this catalog or contact adobe...." . the options are then contact adobe, show in explorer, choose a different catalog or exit"
I cant open LR to do that.....
In your operating system, unzip the catalog file backup, then double-click on the backup catalog
unzip needs to be done using Windows Exlorer (not Edge or Internet Explorer!)
