I'm waiting for answer from the product team about pattern ratios (sorry, I don't know the answer to that question). In the meantime, I thought these tutorials might help:

The two hexagonal pattern types have a ratio of 1 to the square root of 3 [1.732].
If you right-click on a pattern in the Library, you have the option to save it as a Pattern Preset in Photoshop. You can then check in the Preset Manager to see the size of the tile, create a new doc this size, and fill it with the pattern. The doc will have a single tile of the pattern, which you can then edit as you wish.
