Convert fake all-caps to real all-caps?

I've got a document with tons of all-capped words that aren't real all-caps, just created with the shift key. This wouldn't be a problem except that they really need to be lower-case italics. By what magic could I find and replace to make either real all-caps (which should be easy enough to change into normal-case italics) or directly into normal italics? And what punishment should be meted out to the person who perpetrated this heinous typographical crime in the first place? ;^)
