    InDesign CS6 ruins hyperlinks

I'm using InDesign CS6 on a Mac using OSX El Capitan 10.11.6. When I put in a URL for a hyperlink in the hyperlinks panel, InDesign changes it so that it doesn't work. This happens whether I paste it in, or type it in by hand to try to fix it. It changes the numbers and the % symbols. I saw other people complaining about this bug on a forum, but the solution was some JavaScript code. I'm not a programmer, I'm a designer doing layout. Is there any way for a regular person to work around this problem?
