Changing master page item's appearance, without losing the link

This is my first question on this forum — hopefully one that's straightforward enough for someone to answer.

As the title suggests, I want to change the appearance of a master page item (i.e the colour of it for instance) without losing its link to the master page itself, so that any changes I make on that master page is still reflected throughout the document.

I want to avoid overriding because of this, and cmd+shift+click seems to break the link of the master page item although I'm pretty sure that I used this technique on a document I worked on recently for changing the colour of a few page numbers and that seemed to retain the link to the master page...just to throw a curve ball in there.

Any help would be greatly appreciated
